What is a refugee?

"A refugee is defined as a person who has fled his or her home country and cannot return based upon a “well-founded fear of persecution” due to race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a social group" (Haoming 2021).

Since July 2023, Chicago has welcomed over 11,000 refugees from various countries.
